How Alabama Defines a Hit-and-Run

A hit-and-run accident in Alabama is defined as a person fleeing the scene of an accident, without having completed the duties required of them.

When a person is involved in any Birmingham car accident, they have a duty to remain at the scene until he or she has given their personal information to the other vehicle’s driver or to a police officer. This includes their name, address, insurance information, contact information, and driver’s license information, according to Alabama Code Title 32 Chapter 10.

If an individual suffered an injury, the driver must provide reasonable assistance, which includes arranging their transportation to a doctor or hospital for treatment.

A driver that crashes into an unattended vehicle must either locate and notify the operator/owner or leave a note that can be plainly seen, containing their name, address a statement on the circumstances of the accident.

Individuals involved in accidents are also required to report the accident to the police, sheriff, or highway patrol.

Drivers involved in any motor vehicle accident resulting in the injury or wrongful death of another person are required to immediately notify the local police department, county sheriff or the state highway patrol of the accident, whichever is applicable.
